CPAP Machines - FAQs

What is a CPAP machine and what is it used for?

A CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine is a breathing machine that delivers constant air pressure to keep airways open during sleep.

CPAP machines are primarily used to treat obstructive sleep apnoea. For more information on what to do if you have sleep apnoea, check out our article!

Apart from obstructive sleep apnoea, CPAP machines can also be used to treat:

  • Central sleep apnoea (CSA)
  • Asthma
  • Pulmonary oedema

How often should I clean my CPAP machine?

Clean your CPAP machine daily by rinsing the mask and tubing. The water chamber and filters should be cleaned weekly or as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

How long can a patient be on CPAP?

CPAP therapy can be used nightly for years, even for the rest of a patient’s life. Long-term use of CPAP machines is quite common and is proven to be really effective for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea.

What problems (side effects) can a CPAP cause?

The most common side effects of CPAP machines include:
  • Nasal and oral dryness
  • Skin irritation
  • Dry eyes
  • Headache
  • Discomfort

What’s the difference between a CPAP and a BiPAP machine?

A BiPAP machine provides two different pressure levels (higher pressure for inhalation and lower for exhalation), whereas a CPAP delivers one constant pressure. BiPAP is often used for more complex breathing conditions.
