Patient's Medical Background

This individual, aged 63, had been previously hospitalized multiple times due to episodes of bleeding from esophageal varices. Upon admission, he exhibited mild fever, jaundice, and a pronounced flapping tremor in his hands. Other notable findings included ascites, prominent periumbilical veins, and hemorrhoids. The patient experienced severe hematemesis and succumbed to the condition.

Pathological Observations

A section of the liver has been prepared to reveal its cut surface, displaying numerous well-defined nodules ranging in size from 1 to 7 mm in diameter. The external surface of the liver also exhibits a nodular and irregular pattern. This serves as an illustrative example of liver cirrhosis, characterized by a mixed micro- and macro-nodular pattern and significant fatty changes.

The most prevalent cause of cirrhosis and fatty liver changes is attributed to chronic alcoholism.
