Silicone Pessary for Vaginal Use

The Gellhorn vaginal pessary with a short stem is a medical device designed to manage advanced pelvic organ prolapse, such as second or third-degree uterine prolapse (also known as procedentia), cystocele (bladder prolapse), and rectocele (rectal prolapse).

Its mushroom-shaped design, featuring a flat base and a central stem with a knob, provides structural support by resting against the vaginal walls. The short stem variant is particularly beneficial for patients with deeper vaginal canals, offering enhanced stability and retention.

How does the Gellhorn pessary with short stem work?

The Gellhorn pessary has a disc-shaped body that is placed at the upper part of the vagina. This supports the pelvic organs and provides stability in daily life. The short stem is ideal for women with a smaller vaginal canal and also makes removal easier.

What conditions does the Gellhorn Pessary treat?

Uterus prolapse

The uterus is supported by the ‘hammock-like’ combination of pelvic floor muscles, tissue and ligaments.
When these structures are too weak the uterus slips downwards from its natural anatomical position into the vaginal cavity.

Cystocele

A cystocele occurs when the bladder pushes into the vagina. Depending on the grade of prolapse this can be from a grade one where the bladder bulges into the vaginal wall to the most severe where the bulge appears through the entrance of the vagina.

Rectocele

A rectocele is a bulge in the front wall of the rectum into the rear wall of the vagina. If the rectal wall becomes thinned, the weakening of the wall often causes a bulge which can obstruct bowel movement.

How to clean the Gellhorn Pessary

In general pessaries have a very easy way of disinfection. Use lukewarm water and mild soap and let it soak for about 20 minutes. If you see any cracks or tears, replace immediately.
