  • P wave: A small bump representing atrial depolarisation (the electrical signals that make the upper chambers of the heart squeeze and push blood into the lower chambers)
  • PR Interval: The space between the P wave and the QRS complex. It shows the time it takes for the squeezing signal to travel from the upper parts (atria) of the heart to the bottom parts (ventricles).
  • QRS complex: A big spike representing ventricular depolarisation (the time when the ventricles squeeze and pump blood out to the lungs and body).
  • ST segment: A flat line showing the short rest time of the heart after the squeeze (and before the next bump).
  • T wave: A rounded bump after the ST flat line, showing that the heart is relaxing and getting ready for the next beat.
  • Rhythm: The spacing and shape of the wave patterns across heartbeats. A regular rhythm means the heart is beating in a steady, organised way. An irregular rhythm means it may be skipping beats, beating too fast, or beating too slow.
  • Heart rate: This tells how many times the heart squeezes (beats) in one minute.
