What Is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy?

- Gradual inability to walk that results in wheelchair dependence.
- Breathing difficulties – due to the gradual dysfunction of the respiratory muscles.
- Cardiomyopathy – due to the weakening of the heart muscle.

How Is Duchenne Treated?
As already mentioned, Duchenne cannot be treated. Medical care primarily focuses on managing its symptoms and providing nutritional, psychological, and social support to affected males, along with mobility aids.
Meanwhile, emerging therapies are being researched and tested.
Symptoms Management Includes:
- Corticosteroids. This medication is used to slow down muscle weakness.
- Physical Therapy. Such practices are essential for maintaining mobility and range of motion. Orthopaedic management is also an option to address symptoms like scoliosis.
- Respiratory and Cardiac Management. The use of equipment like ventilators supports breathing while pacemakers facilitate cardiac monitoring.

- Gene Therapy. It aims to produce and induce a working copy or a modified version of the dystrophin gene into the muscle cells to generate the missing protein.
- Exon Skipping. This innovative approach uses antisense oligonucleotides to “skip over” faulty sections of the DMD gene when it produces the needed protein, thus allowing a shorter, but hopefully functional dystrophin protein to be made.
